Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | The High Court has annulled the election of Ivan Wafula, the National Unity Platform’s Lord Councillor for Makindye East II, due to irregularities in his nomination process. In a ruling delivered on Thursday, Justice Musa Ssekaana declared Yasin Omar Assini of the National Resistance Movement, the runner-up in the 2021 election, as Wafula’s replacement.
Omar had initially contested the election in the Magistrates Court, alleging that Wafula had falsified his academic qualifications and that the election results were manipulated.
Although the lower court dismissed Omar’s petition, he appealed to the High Court, arguing that procedural errors had occurred during the initial trial.

Upon review, Justice Ssekaana determined that Wafula had provided inaccurate details regarding his nomination seconder and had failed to substantiate his academic credentials.
As a result, the court nullified Wafula’s election and declared Omar the rightful Lord Councillor for Makindye East II.
Omar has since been sworn into office and will complete the term, serving until the 2026 elections.
