Kenya intercepts 7,500 litres of illicit ethanol smuggled from Uganda
A truck ferrying suspected 7,500 litres of uncustomed ethanol was impounded at Lwakhakha Border Station in Western Region.

Nairobi, Kenya | By Michael Wandati | Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) Customs Enforcement officers at the Lwakhakha Border Station have seized a truck carrying 7,500 litres of suspected uncustomed ethanol as part of their ongoing efforts to combat illicit trade.

According to a KRA statement, the truck was intercepted during a routine inspection, revealing a hidden cargo of 30 drums, each containing 250 litres of ethanol.

During the operation, the truck driver escaped, taking the vehicle’s keys with him. KRA officials are currently investigating the truck’s official records to identify the owner and gather further information about the driver.

‘When the truck came from Uganda, it had to go to the verification area. The driver drove to the verification area and then disappeared with the keys,” the statement read in part.

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has detained a truck carrying 7,500 litres of suspected uncustomed ethanol at the Lwakhakha Border Station as investigations continue.

Illicit trade poses a significant challenge to revenue collection, national security, and public health. In response, KRA has adopted a multifaceted approach, employing specialized teams to strengthen market surveillance and crack down on illegal activities.

KRA’s efforts aim to ensure compliance with the law and protect the country from organized crime, smuggling, commercial fraud, and other threats.

As part of its strategy, the agency has established a dedicated border security unit to monitor cargo and human movement, preventing tax evasion and addressing security concerns.

Additionally, KRA collaborates with local security committees, sharing intelligence to curb illicit activities at border points and improve overall security.
