Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | Police have released further information about the tragic shooting of Albert Tugume, the brother of Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura. The incident occurred on Thursday night in Ntinda, a suburb of Kampala.
According to authorities, the shooting took place at approximately 7 p.m. in Kiwatule Central Zone, Nakawa Division. Tugume, who ran a mobile money business, was fatally shot as he tried to escape after realizing he was being targeted by armed robbers.
In a statement issued on Friday morning, Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire explained that Tugume was closing his shop when an attacker approached, attempting to steal his money. Tragically, the robbery escalated, leading to his untimely death.
“During the scuffle, a boda boda rider, Mr. Sabiti Banabas, 30, attempted to intervene but was shot by another armed assailant waiting nearby,” Owoyesigyire said.
He noted that at this time, Tugume attempted to flee the scene but was shot by the waiting armed assailant.
“The assailants made away with a bag believed to have contained an unspecified amount of cash.”
Authorities have revealed further details about the armed robbery in Ntinda, Kampala, that claimed the life of Albert Tugume, brother to Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura.
During the incident, a nearby vehicle with registration number UBH 045H was hit by stray bullets fired by the assailants. Preliminary investigations indicate that while one robber targeted Tugume’s mobile money shop, an accomplice armed with a gun stood nearby. It was the armed assailant who fired the fatal shots, killing Tugume and injuring a boda boda rider who attempted to intervene.
The body of the deceased has been transported to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a postmortem, while the injured boda boda rider is receiving treatment at Mulago Hospital.
Police have confirmed that investigations into the robbery are underway. Meanwhile, the Minister for Youth and Children’s Affairs, Balaam Barugahara, has called on security agencies to act swiftly and ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice.
“It’s devastating to see lives lost to senseless violence. Where is our world headed,” Barugahara said.
he minister urged the nation to “collectively condemn gun violence and criminality” and work towards a safer society.

He shared condolences to the family of Ms Nyanjura, saying “May the deceased’s soul rest in peace and may their legacy of hard work and resilience inspire us to create positive change.”
While mobile money-related robberies had significantly declined following intensive crackdowns by security forces, there are growing concerns that these crimes are reemerging with the onset of the festive season.
