Kasese, Uganda | URN | Police in Kasese has imposed on the five arrested members of National Unity Platform (NUP) with charges of plotting to overthrow President Museveni’s government.
The five were arrested by security operatives on Tuesday 2, November 2021 from Kamaiba ward in Kasese municipality.
Police identified the suspects as Bryan Basisa, the NUP Kasese district chairperson, Geoffrey Bwambale, the NUP coordinator for Bundibugyo, Atanazio Isanat, party member from Ntoroko district, Isaac Mumbere-NUP flag bearer for Nyamwamba division in Kasese in the last general elections, and Oniz Kule, a boda boda rider from Hima town.
ASP Ismail Kaawo, the acting Rwenzori East police spokesperson, told this publication on Friday 5, November 2021 that the five are charged with a count of trying to overthrow a legitimate government after finding them with documents calling for an uprising.
He adds that security is also scrutinizing other several documents they found with the group but was hesitant to divulge details.
Kaawo added that police are finalizing investigations and the suspects would soon be presented before court to answer the charge of plotting to overthrow President Museveni.
The regional police spokesperson says that whereas its legitimate for Ugandans to show their discontent, it must be done through proper channels and with the guidance of security forces especially the police.
Emmanuel Kirunda, the lawyer representing the suspects says police has since Tuesday 2ndn denied him access to his clients.
However, he maintains that he is working with NUP national leadership to ensure the five regain their freedom.
Samuel Masereka, the Kasese NUP district registrar says the charge is meant to tarnish the name of NUP and its members, adding that the party has built its trust among Ugandans through exhibiting peaceful conduct.
