Lira, Uganda | URN | Jasper Awio, a former reporter with Rupiny, a weekly luo publication under the Vision Group has surrendered to Ojwina Police Station in Lira City West division for murdering his longtime girlfriend.
Awio walked into the police station days after the decomposing body of Monica Amongi, was discovered in her house. According to information obtained, the couple that was staying in Anai Ober cell, Anai ward in Lira city West as husband and wife separated in August 2021.
Amongi who has been working with the Election Commission in Kwania district started a new relationship with another person. Awio made various attempts to rekindle the relationship in vain. On March 29th, 2022, he attacked Amongi at her home where he assaulted her and cut her neck before locking the house and disappearing.
Her decomposing body was discovered on April 1st, 2022 when neighbours noticed a stench coming from her house and a swarm of flies covering the door. Jimmy Patrick Okema, the North Kyoga Police Spokesperson confirmed Awio’s arrest.
He explained that the suspect who voluntarily handed over himself to police for murdering his longtime girlfriend tried to commit suicide in the police cells.

Okema described the incident as unfortunate, saying Awio will most likely be slapped with murder based on the guidance of the Resident State Attorney.
Lira City West Division Police Station is investigating the matter under SD Ref 31/01/04/2022. There is a growing concern about such cases in the Lango sub-region.
In September last year, a man attacked and killed his wife in the same village and was also lynched. Denis Alal, 53, hacked Christine Akello, 43, to death on September 13, 2021, prompting residents to capture and lynch him.
