Ugandan lawyer stabs husband to death, surrenders to police

Gulu, Uganda | URN | A Ugandan lawyer and senior member in the Democratic Party (DP), is in police custody in Gulu City for alleged murder.

Francesca Amony, a former National Secretary for the DP Women’s League handed herself in at Lacor Police Post, in Bardege-Layibi Division, after she reportedly stubbed her husband, Dr. Joseph Etuk, to death.

Amony, 34, who also served as the Councillor for Pece Division in the then Gulu Municipal Council, reportedly developed a domestic misunderstanding with her husband on Friday 28, October 2022 night which led to a fight. She reportedly picked a knife and stabbed him.

The deceased was a Medical Doctor in Mbarara City while the suspect is a lawyer, politician, and rights activist.

Police say that the incident occurred at the couple’s home in Keyi ‘’A’’ Cell in Kabedpong Ward, Bardege-Layibi Division in Gulu City.

David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Regional Police Spokesperson, says in a statement on Saturday afternoon that the suspect handed herself to the police and is currently being held at the Gulu West Division Police Station. A case of murder by stabbing has been preferred against her vide SD Ref: 17/29/10/2022.

Mudong explained that preliminary investigations gathered by police indicate that on Friday 28th night at around 11pm the couple developed a misunderstanding. In the scuffle that followed, Amony picked a knife and stabbed her husband.

He added that Dr. Etuk died while being rushed to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital.

Mudong says a team of homicide detectives visited the scene and recovered the knife.

In 2019, the Gulu High Court convicted Amony on two counts of aggravated torture of her two housemaids. She was accused of burning her two house helps aged 13 and 17 respectively with a hot flat iron.
