Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | Uganda has officially lifted visa requirements for citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), a move stemming from the country’s membership in the East African Community (EAC).

The decision, disclosed by Lt Gen Joseph Musanyufu, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal affairs, was reached during the 8th joint permanent commission held in Kinshasa, DR Congo, in October 2023.

During this commission, which took place from October 11 to October 15, 2023, the parties mutually agreed to waive visa requirements for citizens of both countries in adherence to the principles outlined in the protocol of the EAC-market-free movement of persons.

This protocol, governed by the establishment of the East African Community (EAC), mandates partner states to facilitate the entry of citizens from fellow partner states without the need for a visa.

Lt Gen Musanyufu clarified that this reciprocal visa exemption will be implemented starting January 1, 2024. Furthermore, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is anticipated to reciprocate by allowing Ugandan citizens entry into DRC without the requirement of a visa.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) formally joined the East African Community (EAC) Treaty on April 8, 2022, and subsequently attained full membership status within the EAC on July 11, 2022. This move towards visa-free travel aligns with the broader objectives of regional integration and cooperation among EAC member states.
