Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | In a devastating accident that unfolded Thursday 7, December 2023 around 7:00 pm at Namboole interchange along the Kampala-Jinja road, two lives were tragically lost, and several others left injured when a Fuso Box Body truck, registered as UBD 520H, collided with 13 cars and 2 motorcycles.
According to the preliminary reports from first responders at the scene, the Fuso truck, which was transporting maize from Nalya to Namboole, lost control at the roundabout, failed to brake, and collided with the multitude of vehicles, resulting in a chaotic and fatal incident.
“Two people have died in an accident involving M/V Reg. UBD 520H Fuso Box Body, thirteen (13) other cars & two (02) Motorcycles which happened this evening 7/12/2023 on the Northern Bypass- Namboole Round about at about 07:00pm.
According to initial reports from our first responders, the driver of M/V Reg No UBD 520H, transporting maize from Nalya to Namboole, lost control at the roundabout, failed to brake, and rammed into 13 cars and 02 motorcycles, resulting in the loss of two lives,” Police said in a statement.
The deceased individuals have been identified as an unidentified male, and a female passenger who was on one of the motorcycles involved in the collision. Their bodies have been transported to the Mulago City mortuary.
An undisclosed number of people sustained injuries in the accident and were promptly rushed to Gwatilo and Mulago Hospitals for medical attention. The gravity of their injuries remains unclear at this point.
The affected motor vehicles in Namboole accident, including the Fuso truck, have been towed to the Bweyogere Police Station pending a thorough inspection as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
Law enforcement has initiated a search for the driver of the Fuso truck, who reportedly fled the scene of the accident. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the driver to come forward and assist with the investigation.
The accident has caused significant disruptions in the flow of traffic in the area, prompting law enforcement to issue advisories for commuters to seek alternative routes while the investigation and cleanup efforts are underway.
The Ugandan Police Force is actively working to piece together the sequence of events leading to the tragic accident. The focus of the investigation is on determining the cause of the driver’s loss of control and failure to brake, leading to the extensive collision.
