Kampala, Uganda | URN | House of Prayer Ministries lead Pastor Aloysius Bugingo last night was reportedly rushed to Mulago Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after being shot en route to his home according to Rubaga Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC), Anderson Burora.

“Attempts to End Pastor Bugingo’s life this evening failed after unknown gunmen aimed at his car this evening after Nansana. Reliable sources have confirmed that he’s out of danger,” Burora wrote on X (formally Twitter) at EAT 11.26 pm.

Police have confirmed the death of Pastor Aloysious Bugingo’s bodyguard in Tuesday night’s shooting incident in Namungoona, a Kampala suburb.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police Deputy Spokesperson ASP Luke Owoyesigyire identified the deceased as Richard Muhumuza.

“The Old Kampala Police are currently conducting a comprehensive investigation into a tragic incident involving the attempted murder of Pastor Alloysious Bugingo from the House of Prayer Ministry and the unfortunate killing of his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard,” said Owoyesigyire in a statement on Wednesday morning.

“At approximately 9:00 PM on January 2, 2024, unidentified assailants opened fire on Pastor Bugingo’s vehicle, registered as PRAIZ GOD, along Namungoona, Zone 2, Kasubi, Rubaga Division, Kampala at Bwalakata Junction along National Housing Road , before swiftly escaping the scene on a motorcycle,” he added.

Owoyesigyire said despite sustaining injuries during the attack, Pastor Bugingo managed to transport the vehicle to Mulago Hospital.

“Regrettably, his bodyguard, Muhumuza Richard, succumbed to the assault and was confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital,” said Owoyesigyire.

“Currently, Pastor Bugingo is undergoing medical treatment and is under close monitoring,” he added.

Owoyesigyire said upon an immediate response to the incident, the police discovered that the scene had been tampered with.

“Statements from eyewitnesses have been diligently recorded, and the deceased’s body has been conveyed to the City Mortuary at Mulago for a thorough postmortem examination,” he observed.

“In our active pursuit of justice, we are thoroughly reviewing CCTV footage to identify the assailants. Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available,” he added.

Bugingo, a prominent and controversial pastor, openly expresses his disgust for the opposition and support for the ruling government and in particular first son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s presidential ambitions.

Last year Uganda recorded unprecedented gun violence cases that saw several prominent persons shot dead with almost absolute impunity. It seems 2024 has picked up from where 2023 ended.
