UBOS has launched a household listing initiative in cities nationwide as part of the preparations for the upcoming 2024 National Population and Housing Census scheduled for May 9th and 10th.

Mbale, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has launched a household listing initiative in cities nationwide as part of the preparations for the upcoming 2024 National Population and Housing Census scheduled for May 9th and 10th.

The launch, held at Mbale City Hall Chambers on Monday 22, January 2024, saw Didacus Okoth, the Senior Public Communication Officer at UBOS, elaborate on the purpose of the initiative. The primary goal is to identify all households within specific areas across the 11 cities in the country.

Okoth underscored that the household listing ahead of 2024 census serves to streamline the identification of households in each city, facilitating the determination of the required number of enumerators for an accurate population count.

He highlighted the unique challenges in metropolitan areas, where the constant movement of people day and night presents distinct complexities compared to rural regions.

The initiative will specifically focus on counting the number of houses in designated cells or wards. Rex Achelin, the Mbale City Resident Commissioner, declared the two census days as public holidays to ensure that people are at home and can be accurately counted.

Achelin also issued a caution to individuals associated with religious groups, urging them not to undermine the government program. He emphasized that the law would take its course against anyone attempting to subvert the integrity of the census process.
