UBOS starts recruitment of census enumerators as exercise goes digital

Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has started the recruitment process for enumerators for the upcoming National Population and Housing Census, set to commence in May 2024.

A total of 114,460 enumerators and 18,483 supervisors are sought for various roles in the census exercise. Enumerators will play a crucial part in the groundwork, involving the mapping of village-based census areas, as well as conducting door-to-door community mobilization to encourage participation in the census.

From May 9th to May 19th, 2024, enumerators will be responsible for collecting information on individuals, households, institutions, and communities within their designated enumeration areas.

Eligibility for enumerator positions is open to any Ugandan aged 18 to 50 years, provided they meet the below specified criteria;

  • Should have at least an “A” level certificate or its equivalent and with a credit in English and Mathematics at “O” level.
  • Prospective enumerators need to be recommended by the local authorities in their respective LC 1 areas.
  • Must be a Ugandan of good conduct, sound mind and fluent in the local languages spoken in the areas of enumeration.
  • Must possess knowledge in basic computer applications
  • Should have a valid National Identity Card issued by NIRA.

The 2024 National population and Housing Census will be the first paperless (digital) census in Uganda conducted on hand-held electronic devices or tablets in all the districts.

NB: Only online applications are accepted.

Dr. Chris Ndatira Mukiza, the Executive Director of UBOS, emphasizes the significance of registering phone numbers in individuals’ names for the payment process. Failure to do so will result in non-payment.

Additionally, smartphones will serve as a contingency plan (“Plan B”) in case of tablet malfunctions or delays in their delivery.
