Uganda police arrests hacker targeting mobile money systems

Kampala, Uganda | By Michael Wandati | The joint efforts of the Criminal Investigations task team and Mukono CPS have resulted in the apprehension of a notorious hacker accused of infiltrating mobile money systems and embezzling significant sums from agents across multiple locations.

The arrested individual, Sabiiti Kaporonyo, a 48-year-old hacker residing in Namugongo, Wakiso, is currently in police custody, facing charges of cybercrime and theft, as confirmed by Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga.

Addressing the media on Monday, February 12, 2024, Enanga disclosed that the suspect had amassed millions through his hacking activities, victimizing individuals in Mukono, Jinja, Misindye, Kiira division, Kinoni, Nagalama, and other areas.

“The suspect made millions of shillings from hacking into mobile money systems by agents in Mukono, Jinja, Misindye, Kiira division, Kinoni and Nagalama, among others. He had also allegedly customized his car registration number plates, believing his car movements would not be detected,” said Enanga during Monday’s security briefing.

Following the arrest, Enanga reported, “An immediate search was conducted which led to the recovery of 4 Airtel lines and a hacking machine. His motor vehicle, a Toyota Harrier, registration number UBD 612P, white in colour was also impounded.”

“As the Joint Security Agencies, we continue to locate and fight these kinds of criminals who steal and hurt innocent business persons. We shall investigate, expose and disrupt them,” he added.
